Tanjung Simpang Mengayau, Kudat

If you came to Kudat Town, Tanjung Simpang Mengayau is a must visit place. Its one of the most popular attractions in Sabah. Tanjung Simpang Mengayau or famously known as Tip Of Borneo because its located at the northernmost tip of Borneo island. The interesting about Tanjung Simpang Mengayau is the tip also marks the meeting point of two big ocean, the South China Sea and Sulu Sea.

Tanjung Simpang Mengayau was originally named Tanjung Sampang Mangazou. The former name comes from the language of Rungus, one of big ethnic in Sabah which resides mainly in the district of Kudat. According to the local folklore, The Tanjung Sampang Mangazou refers as the location of a battle that occurred when the ethnic Rungus defended their territory against the attack from pirates.

I've been visited here for 3-4 times  since my 1st come to this place in 2001. During that time this place are only famous among local people before this place slowly started to developed as one of the tourist attraction in Sabah. I still  remember my 1st came here with my friends. The road are still unpaved and we need to climb up some hill to reach at place which now located the large globe. Today, the Tanjung Simpang Mengayau  is equipped with amenities such as parking lots, sheds, restrooms and a canteen to make your visit more convenient and comfortable.

The walk up to the tip is quite long. And for those who don't like walking (like me) it will be a bit tiring. But believe me, the walk is worth as you walk to the tip, you will sees a priceless scenery.

The Tanjung Simpang Mengayau located in a park-like grounds and feature a square with a Malaysian flag pole and a large bronze globe.  The bronze globe marks the location of Tanjung Simpang Mengayau at latitude 7 degress north and longitude 116 degrees east with a map featuring the island of Borneo is embossed in bronze and laid on a flat surface at an angle with inscriptions to mark the Tip of Borneo.

Sunset Music Fest at the Tip of Borneo, Kudat

One of the event that held at Tanjung Simpang Mengayau. This yearly event are organised by Sabah Tourism board and Sri Pelancongan Sabah, serenades audiences with classical favourites and contemporary tunes as the sun sets on the horizon. If you wish to participate, this event are held some time in mid-year every year. Enjoy the beautiful sounds of a full orchestra against a backdrop of one of Borneo’s most breath-taking sceneries.


How To Get There

It takes approximately three to four hours’ travel by land to get to Kudat from Kota Kinabalu. From Kudat Town, you can go by taxi, self-drive or with a tour agent. Four-wheel drives and saloon cars with permits are stationed near the Indian Restaurant opposite the Health Clinic in Kampung Air. Four-wheel drives can take between 7-8 passengers at RM20.00 - RM25.00 per pax return, while saloon cars take up to 4 passengers and charge RM240.00 for a return trip to Simpang Mengayau. - Source : sabahtourism.


Accommandation

There are several resort and chalet you can find here if you are planning to stay overnight and experience the night life at Tanjung Simpang Mengayau. Or you can also opt to stay at a home stay which you can find at the nearest village to experience the 'kampung life'. Book earlier if you are planned to stay especially during the holiday season to avoid trouble later. This is because, resorts and homestays are usually full, especially when its a year end holidays.


Tip of Borneo Resort is also known simply as Tommy’s Place. Guests just need to cross the road to get to the beach on the other side. It has eight rooms priced at RM130 for a room that fits two and RM160 for a room that fits three. Price is inclusive of taxes and breakfast. Tommy’s has a restaurant that serves a selection of local and western dishes.

TSM Merrimas Villa located next to tip of Borneo, has 14 chalets and a restaurant. Among these chalets, there are three categories, namely Honeymoon, Hyperstar and Happyfamily. Honeymoon category consist 9 units of double queen-sized bed chalets, while Hyperstar category is having 2 units of double queen-sized bed chalets but with a larger space. Finally, 3 units of chalets with 2 rooms and a living room are under Happyfamily category. Each room comprises with 2 double queen-sized beds. Besides, Kudat is also a place that is famous for its seafood varieties and you can have the opportunity to taste the local seafood at the restaurant inside here. The chalet are made from wooden and selected bamboos.
